Square Enix has announced the sudden discontinuation of the Kingdom Hearts Cloud Version games for the original Switch, marking the end of one of the platform’s most debated cloud releases as the publisher pivots to native ports. Effective immediately, the entire cloud-based catalog has been pulled from sale on the Nintendo eShop. However, this shutdown paves the way for a massive next-generation rollout: native versions of the franchise are officially headed to the Nintendo Switch 2, alongside the confirmation that Kingdom Hearts IV will launch on Nintendo’s next-gen console.
The End of the Controversial Release
The sudden delisting immediately affects the following cloud-based titles:
- KINGDOM HEARTS – HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX – Cloud Version
- KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue Cloud Version
- KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind (DLC) Cloud Version
- KINGDOM HEARTS INTEGRUM MASTERPIECE for Cloud
While these games can no longer be purchased, current owners can still play them until the servers go dark permanently at 14:59 UTC on Wednesday, June 9, 2027.
Since their launch, the cloud versions of the beloved action-RPG franchise were heavily criticized for performance hiccups, input lag, and requiring a constant, high-speed connection. This release reignited the debate over whether cloud gaming on the Nintendo Switch is worth it, and Square Enix’s pivot to native releases serves as a definitive answer.
Switch 2 Gets the Collection, Original Switch Gets 1.5+2.5
The silver lining for fans is substantial, though spread across two console generations. On October 8, 2026, Square Enix will launch Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] on the Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This streamlined, all-in-one bundle runs natively on the console
Original Nintendo Switch owners aren’t being completely left behind, either. While the more demanding games are skipping the older hardware, a port of Kingdom Hearts – HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX is being prepared specifically for the original Nintendo Switch.
To ease the transition, Square Enix is offering a migration path for existing players:
- 50% Upgrade Discount: Players who purchased any Kingdom Hearts cloud version on the original Nintendo Switch can upgrade to the corresponding native digital version at a 50% discount via the Nintendo eShop.
- Save Data Transfer: Cloud players will be able to transfer their existing save data directly to the new versions.
- Integrum Masterpiece Owners: Those who purchased the INTEGRUM MASTERPIECE for Cloud are eligible for the 50% discount on all individual digital titles.
Multiplatform Release, Play Anywhere, and Better Cloud
While Nintendo owners are getting specific upgrade options, Square Enix is ensuring the franchise reaches its peak modern form across all major platforms. On October 8, the Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] will also arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It’s worth adding that those who own the original versions of the games will get a discount for the new ones as well.
For players in the Xbox and PC ecosystem, this release will feature full Xbox Play Anywhere support. This means a single digital purchase grants access on both Xbox Series X|S consoles and PC, complete with cross-buy, cross-save, and cloud-synced achievements.
Ironically, while the Switch’s specialized cloud servers are heading to the graveyard, this native multiplatform release paves the way for a healthier cloud future. Running on modern architectures, these collections are prime candidates for Xbox Cloud and PlayStation Cloud. Unlike unstable Switch-only cloud releases, streaming from robust servers will finally deliver the smooth, low-latency experience cloud players originally deserved.
This shift also points to a fundamental difference in platform ecosystems. These games were 100% cloud-only on the Switch. When servers are shut down, they will be totally unplayable. Cloud streaming is an optional “add-on” to owning games on Xbox and PlayStation. A buyer will still have local download and play rights. This hybrid model provides an essential consumer preservation safety net that the Switch lacked.
Kingdom Hearts IV Confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2
We couldn’t end the post without mentioning it… In a major surprise during the latest Nintendo Direct showcase, Square Enix debuted a brand-new trailer for Kingdom Hearts IV, officially confirming that the highly anticipated next mainline entry is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2, alongside the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
