Xbox Cloud Gaming Tests Resolution and Bitrate Settings

After teasing us barely a week ago, Xbox has started testing a new feature. This allows players to manually select the resolution and bitrate used for cloud gaming. The option is currently available only to Xbox Insider members enrolled in the PC Gaming preview.

The Cloud Gaming section in the settings menu now includes resolution presets. These include 720p, 1080p, and 1440p, each with corresponding data usage rates ranging from 3 GB per hour to 14 GB per hour. There’s also an Auto option that adjusts quality dynamically based on the user’s connection and device capabilities.

According to the menu, users with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription can access higher bitrate options. These include 1440p Max Quality, which consumes up to 14 GB per hour. This aligns with Microsoft’s updated Game Pass structure. It confirmed that cloud gaming at higher resolutions would be exclusive to Ultimate members.

The feature, already available on services like GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna, gives players more control over their streaming experience. Something long requested by those who use Xbox Cloud Gaming across devices like PCs, handhelds, and smart TVs. The need to conserve data or maximize image fidelity.

There’s no word yet on when the function will roll out to all users. However, its appearance in Insider builds indicates a wider release could be coming soon. Still, now that this option has been made public, will we see the fabled free Xbox Cloud subscription soon as well?
