Xbox Reveals Cloud Playtime Pricing Ahead of November Rollout

Xbox has started testing a new way to stream Xbox games from the cloud without a Game Pass subscription. Starting today, Xbox Insiders can purchase cloud playtime, stream games on supported devices, and share feedback ahead of a broader rollout planned for November.

The preview is limited to Insiders who do not have an active Game Pass subscription, and it finally puts a price on the paid playtime option Xbox announced back in September.

Three packs at introductory pricing, and the hours never expire

Cloud playtime is available in three packs at introductory launch pricing:

  • 10 hours for $3.99
  • 25 hours for $7.99
  • 50 hours for $11.99

That works out at roughly $0.40 per hour on the smallest pack and about $0.24 per hour on the largest. Xbox describes the packs as an ad-free cloud gaming experience with shorter wait times and high-quality streaming, and says purchased playtime remains available until it is used. There is no monthly reset: unused hours simply stay on the account.

The missing details

Paid playtime is one half of the big Xbox Cloud Gaming change taking effect in November. As we covered when Xbox announced the end of unlimited cloud gaming for Game Pass. What Xbox had not shared until now was the price of that extra time. Today’s Insider preview is our first look at it.

It also sets up an interesting contrast with the subscription. Game Pass hours are a monthly allowance, while purchased packs never expire. For players who only stream occasionally, a 10-hour pack at $3.99 could work out cheaper than keeping a subscription, something we explored in our Are 5, 10 or 15 hours of Xbox Cloud Gaming enough? post.

There is one catch: a pack does not include any games. Streaming with purchased playtime requires a cloud-playable game purchase or free-to-play access for select titles.

A free route is still on the table

Xbox also reiterated that Insiders can try cloud gaming for free with ads. That separate test, which began in July, lets players stream select games they own after watching ads before each session, with sessions capped at one hour.

Between the ad-supported tier and paid playtime packs, Xbox is now testing two ways into cloud gaming that skip Game Pass entirely.
