Blacknut is hiring a Head of Infrastructure, according to a new job posting on LinkedIn. The role will oversee the servers and backend technology supporting its worldwide cloud gaming service. The French company streams more than 1,000 games to compatible TVs, phones, and computers, including through telecom partners. It reported more than three million subscribers across over 65 countries in August.
Based in Cesson-Sévigné, France, the new hire will oversee daily operations and future deployments. The job posting also describes internally developed software that manages Blacknut’s game servers and a virtualisation platform it owns.
Blacknut’s Infrastructure Includes In-House Game Server Technology
Blacknut uses software written in Go to orchestrate its game servers. It developed that technology internally to manage the particular performance demands of cloud gaming. It also operates several dozen points of presence worldwide. These are network locations used to connect its infrastructure in different regions.
Blacknut isn’t just a direct-to-consumer subscription. Telecom and device partners can also offer its gaming service, sometimes under their own brands. That helps explain why the company describes dozens of separate service deployments rather than a single app.
Blacknut also operates its own KVM-based virtualisation platform. KVM lets a Linux server host separate virtual machines. Its development and deployment processes are automated, and the company uses Kubernetes clusters for infrastructure tooling.
New Head of Infrastructure Will Oversee Global Operations
The person hired will lead Blacknut’s infrastructure and backend team. They’ll be responsible for keeping the service available, responding to incidents, and planning improvements to performance, capacity, scalability, and costs.
They’ll also work with the streaming, front-end, data, and deployment teams. Blacknut wants someone with experience managing cloud infrastructure, Linux, networking, virtualisation, and container technology. The position also involves coordinating with product and finance teams on platform improvements. The listing puts particular emphasis on keeping the service available and handling major incidents.
That behind-the-scenes work directly affects your experience when you start a cloud game. If capacity is limited or a server fails, access can be interrupted. Managing those risks is part of the job, along with preparing the infrastructure for future demand.
New Deployments Remain Part of Blacknut’s Infrastructure Plans
The role includes overseeing new points of presence using either Blacknut-owned equipment or infrastructure supplied by cloud providers and other partners.
In August, Blacknut announced an investment from Digital Alpha worth up to $215 million. The funding is intended to support infrastructure alongside product development, content, and international growth.
Blacknut’s partnership with Qwilt provides an example of the infrastructure work involved. Announced in August, the partnership plans to put dedicated gaming GPUs inside internet service provider networks, alongside Qwilt’s existing storage. The companies haven’t named the first participating operator or a launch date.
Blacknut has not announced where its next points of presence will be deployed or when they will become operational.
