Blacknut Says Its Subscriber Base Tripled in a Year to Over 3 Million

Blacknut CEO Olivier Avaro with François Sorel during a BFM Business Tech & Co interview

Blacknut CEO Olivier Avaro says the cloud gaming service’s subscriber base tripled over the past year and now stands at more than 3 million worldwide. He shared the growth figure during an August 31 interview with François Sorel on BFM Business’ Tech & Co.

The 3-million-plus total itself isn’t new. Blacknut disclosed it on August 18 when Digital Alpha announced an investment of up to $215 million in the company. What is new is the pace of that growth. Avaro said that growth and the company’s recent success helped convince Digital Alpha to invest.

Blacknut Says Its Subscriber Count Tripled in One Year

Asked about Blacknut’s current subscriber total, Avaro put it at more than 3 million worldwide. He said the company had tripled that figure over the past year.

Blacknut’s subscription includes access to more than 1,000 games without requiring a gaming PC or console. The games run remotely and can be played through compatible connected TVs, computers, streaming devices, and other supported screens.

The interview doesn’t break down those 3 million subscribers by device, country, or distribution partner. It also doesn’t say how many subscribers use Blacknut directly compared with partner-branded versions of the service.

TV and Telecom Distribution Extend Blacknut’s Reach

Avaro explained that Blacknut doesn’t operate only as a consumer-facing subscription. It also works with game publishers, studios, telecom operators, and distributors that can add gaming to their existing services.

The Blacknut name can be visible to the customer, but the service can also appear under a partner’s own brand. Avaro cited Samsung, LG, and Philips TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and operator set-top boxes as examples of where Blacknut can appear.

He also named Orange, Jio in India, and True in Thailand while discussing Blacknut’s telecom relationships. That setup also means Blacknut can add subscribers without every customer signing up through Blacknut itself.

Avaro didn’t say which part of that distribution network drove the subscriber increase. The new figure reflects Blacknut’s overall growth, not the performance of a specific TV platform, telecom partner, or country.

Avaro directly connected Blacknut’s subscriber growth with Digital Alpha’s decision to invest. He said the company’s growth and recent success helped convince its new shareholder to back the business.

Digital Alpha became a strategic shareholder in Blacknut on August 18. The transaction includes up to $215 million to support product development, content expansion, cloud gaming infrastructure, and international growth.

Avaro also gave some more context around the infrastructure side of Blacknut’s business. He said cloud gaming can give server makers recurring, stable revenue from GPU capacity, while Blacknut can keep using GPUs that are three or four years old instead of always needing the newest generation.

The subscriber growth is still the bigger news here. Blacknut had already told us it was above 3 million subscribers. What we know now is how quickly it got there.
