A community developer is making progress on custom Stadia Controller firmware designed to restore the controller’s original Wi-Fi functionality. In a new post on Reddit’s r/Stadia community, developer bitnullbyte says they have successfully flashed a Stadia Controller back to its original Wi-Fi firmware. They can now connect it to their home Wi-Fi network.
There isn’t a public custom firmware release yet. Work is focused on recreating the Wi-Fi pairing process once handled by the Stadia mobile app. Plans include redirecting the controller away from Google’s old Stadia endpoints. One of bitnullbyte’s personal goals is eventually using the controller directly over Wi-Fi with a Shadow cloud PC.
Stadia Controller Connects To Home Wi-Fi Again
bitnullbyte says they have decompiled the Stadia Controller firmware and mapped how its internal systems operate. They have also successfully flashed the controller back to its original Wi-Fi firmware. They are also working through the Wi-Fi pairing process used to pass network credentials to the controller.
That Wi-Fi connection was one of the Stadia Controller’s defining features when Google’s cloud gaming service was operating. Its original Stadia setup allowed the controller to connect directly to the cloud through a home Wi-Fi network. It wasn’t functioning solely as a traditional wireless controller connected to the device displaying the game.
After Stadia shut down in January 2023, Google offered a firmware update that enabled Bluetooth Low Energy. This allowed owners to continue using the controller wirelessly with other devices. Google’s support documentation states that enabling Bluetooth mode permanently disables the controller’s Wi-Fi connectivity. Google’s official process cannot reverse the change.
The community firmware effort is trying to recover a capability that disappeared with Stadia.
Shadow Is One Goal For The Custom Firmware
Restoring a Wi-Fi connection is only part of the work. bitnullbyte says the next stage involves replacing the controller’s hardcoded URLs. It would no longer attempt to communicate with Google’s former Stadia infrastructure and could instead route those connections locally.
The cloud gaming connection is especially interesting. In a reply on Reddit, bitnullbyte says they use a Shadow cloud PC. They want to eventually connect the Stadia Controller directly to that cloud PC over Wi-Fi instead of using Bluetooth.
Shadow support isn’t working through the custom firmware yet, so this remains a development goal rather than a confirmed feature. There is also no confirmed compatibility with other cloud gaming or remote-play services at this stage.
A Public Release Still Has Work Ahead
There is no downloadable custom Stadia Controller firmware available yet. bitnullbyte says the work is currently stored locally. They plan to share a GitHub repository so others can follow its progress and potentially contribute.
Getting the controller connected to Wi-Fi is an important step. bitnullbyte still lists Wi-Fi provisioning and replacing Google’s old connection URLs among the work ahead.
The next milestone is replacing those old Google URLs and routing the controller locally. If that work succeeds, it would move the effort beyond simply getting the Stadia Controller onto Wi-Fi. It would get closer to restoring the Wi-Fi functionality the custom firmware is being developed to recover.
