Kingdom Hearts IV Set for Late 2027: Why It Could Be Cloud Gaming’s Biggest Title Yet

Kingdom Hearts IV targets a late 2027 release on both PC and consoles, with strong signs pointing to day-one cloud gaming support.

Square Enix has officially confirmed that Kingdom Hearts IV will release in late 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC. Revealed during the D23 2026 Disney Entertainment Showcase, a brand-new trailer debuted an in-game world inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Coco, alongside news of a companion anime series in development for Disney+. For cloud gamers looking forward to Kingdom Hearts IV, several key details from the announcement point to very strong cloud streaming potential on day one.

Kingdom Hearts Fully Playable via the Cloud?

One of the biggest giveaways for cloud users is the title’s Xbox Play Anywhere support. Historically, Xbox Play Anywhere titles almost universally integrate into Xbox Cloud Gaming thanks to its Stream Your Own library, making it highly probable that Kingdom Hearts IV will be playable via Xbox Cloud right at launch. Similarly, with Sony’s ongoing expansion of PS5 cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members, PlayStation Cloud support is expected. The inclusion of the Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch platform also ensures handheld gamers will be well catered to natively and portably.

The cloud momentum for the franchise starts even sooner than 2027. Ahead of the fourth main installment, new updated versions of the original Kingdom Hearts trilogy are slated to release this October. These releases are also anticipated to arrive on cloud gaming platforms, laying the groundwork for the full saga to be fully accessible via the cloud. The original releases of Kingdom Hearts 1, 2 and 3 already support a wide list of cloud gaming services. Weirdly enough, the games are not playable via PlayStation Cloud, despite the long story of the franchise with PlayStation. Things might change once the remastered versions release, however.

It’s worth mentioning that last week, Xbox Cloud added support for a good chunk of Disney-owned franchises and games. You can read more about that here.

My Most Anticipated Release of 2027 So Far

In terms of gameplay and narrative details unveiled at D23, Kingdom Hearts IV will see Sora navigating the realistic, mysterious city of Quadratum while fighting off the Heartless. In addition to Sora, we’ll be able to play as Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as they search for Sora’s whereabouts across various Disney worlds.

As a Final Fantasy fan who has previously only dabbled in spin-offs like Chain of Memories and the Nintendo DS titles, this news couldn’t come at a better time. With the updated original trilogy coming out in this October and Kingdom Hearts IV preparing for a cloud push in 2027, the barrier to entry for the core saga has never been lower. I can’t wait to finally dive into this iconic universe and follow Sora’s main journey from start to finish!
