Netflix-owned Next Games is developing more cloud gaming experiences for the living room, including more Netflix franchises and additional courses for Netflix Minigolf. Managing director Saara Bergström confirmed the work in an interview with What’s on Netflix, although she didn’t name the upcoming franchises or provide release timing.
The studio also has several concepts underway that combine game mechanics with a broader social experience. The work expands Next Games’ lineup for Netflix Games on TV, where games stream to supported televisions and phones serve as controllers.
More Netflix Minigolf Franchises And Courses Are In Development
Next Games is already working on additional Netflix franchises and more courses for Netflix Minigolf. The current game draws from Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bridgerton, with each series receiving its own themed courses and obstacles.
Netflix Minigolf launched on July 28 with more than 60 courses and support for up to four people. Each person uses a phone or tablet to control their shots while the game runs on a supported television or streaming device. Pranks also let someone interfere with an opponent’s turn.
Next Games hasn’t identified the franchises being added next or said how many courses are in development. Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bridgerton won’t be the end of Netflix Minigolf’s themed content.
The game took approximately one year to produce. Its core development team started small before growing to around 15 to 20 people, with additional outside support used during production. During development, Next Games also relied on internal testing across Netflix and external focus groups to refine the interaction between the television, mobile controllers and everyone in the room.
Next Games Has More Living Room Experiences Underway
Netflix Minigolf is only one part of Next Games’ current work for Netflix Games on TV. Next Games is also working on several unnamed concepts designed around social interaction in the living room, although no names or release windows were provided.
Next Games began exploring Netflix’s living-room cloud gaming format with Underwatermelon in 2024. The studio later expanded into party games including Pictionary: Game Night, Boggle Party, Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends and Netflix Minigolf. Each game has helped the team learn more about designing experiences that connect a television, smartphones and the people sharing the room.
Next Games believes it has barely begun exploring party games through Netflix cloud gaming. The studio hasn’t named its other concepts, leaving the next Netflix Minigolf franchises and courses as the clearest part of its future plans.
