Unity has announced a dedicated engine for Netflix Games designed to support cloud gaming optimization, cross-platform builds, and simpler access to games developed for the service.
Netflix-owned Night School Studio has used the engine for its latest games. Netflix games built with Unity include Black Mirror: Thronglets, Unhinged, and Squid Game: Unleashed.
Netflix Engine Focuses On Cloud Optimization And Cross-Platform Builds
The dedicated engine is intended to reduce some of the work involved in preparing games for Netflix. Unity is tailoring the technology around cloud gaming so optimization can become part of the development process rather than an extra step added later.
Cross-platform build support is another part of the engine. It will allow developers to prepare the same game for more than one platform from a shared development foundation.
Game access is the third confirmed area. The engine is intended to make it easier for people to start Netflix games across the devices supported by the service.
Night School Studio Has Already Used The Engine
Night School Studio has worked with the dedicated engine while developing its latest games. The Netflix-owned developer previously used several Unity technologies on Black Mirror: Thronglets, including the physics engine during early prototyping.
Unhinged also provides a clear example of the cross-device experiences Netflix is pursuing. The game streams to TVs and computers while a phone acts as the controller, removing the need for a console or traditional gamepad.
Using the engine during active development gives Unity and Netflix a working foundation rather than technology being announced only for future use.
Netflix Continues Expanding Its Cloud Gaming Operation
The dedicated engine arrives as Netflix continues expanding its cloud gaming operation. Monthly use of Netflix cloud games has increased elevenfold since October 2025, although the company hasn’t disclosed the total audience behind that growth.
The engine adds a development layer to that expansion. Unity is adapting its technology around cloud delivery and cross-platform production while Netflix creates more games intended to move across TVs, computers, and mobile devices.
