The Xbox app will no longer be supported on 2020 Samsung Smart TVs from November 3, 2026, according to a notification Xbox has sent to affected users. Microsoft says upcoming changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming are incompatible with the operating system available on those models.
Windows Central reports that the notice was sent to accounts that had previously used the Xbox app on a 2020 Samsung Smart TV. Its quoted email also says streaming will remain available on supported Samsung TVs from 2021 onward, as well as other supported devices.
Why is Xbox dropping support?
Microsoft gives an OS compatibility explanation in the email quoted by Windows Central:
“Starting 3 November, the XBOX app will no longer be supported on 2020 Samsung Smart TVs as updates to the technology that powers XBOX Cloud Gaming are no longer compatible with the operating system version available on these models.”
An user on X posted a notification in Portuguese with the same November 3 date and compatibility explanation.
The notice does not identify the specific technology change or explain which part of the TV OS prevents continued support. Both Windows Central and Kotaku’s coverage question how much detail Microsoft has provided, but suggestions that the move is intended to cut bandwidth or operating costs remain speculation.
Personally, I think the changes Microsoft mentions could be related to the new Xbox Cloud interface we previously covered. That is my interpretation, not a confirmed explanation. Microsoft has not linked the redesigned interface to the end of support on 2020 Samsung TVs. It’s worth noting that 2020 LG TVs and similar brands did not get Xbox support.
What can affected players use instead?
The email points affected users toward newer supported Samsung TVs, PCs, smartphones, tablets, and Xbox consoles. Xbox’s TV compatibility page also lists select Amazon Fire TV devices and compatible LG TVs as ways to stream on a TV.
For owners of an affected Samsung TV, a supported external streaming device could offer a way to keep playing on the same screen without replacing the TV. That said, compatibility should be checked for the exact device before buying one.
Another November change for Xbox Cloud
The app retirement comes as Xbox prepares to introduce monthly cloud gaming allowances for Game Pass in November. Essential will include five hours, Premium 10 and Ultimate 15, with additional playtime available to buy.
