XBOX has announced a new digital entitlement feature for supported XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games. Owners will be able to claim a digital entitlement from their physical copy, with XBOX Insiders beginning to test the feature on August 31, 2026. To claim it, insert a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launch the game.
Once claimed, the entitlement can unlock digital benefits including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where the individual game supports them. The original physical disc continues to work normally, so eligible games can gain those newer access options without giving up the physical copy.
The XBOX announcement arrives less than two months after PlayStation announced a major change for its physical releases. Physical disc production for all new PlayStation games will end beginning in January 2028. The decision has drawn significant backlash around ownership, resale, sharing, and game preservation. XBOX hasn’t said its digital entitlement feature is a response to PlayStation’s decision.
Physical XBOX Games Can Claim Digital Entitlements
XBOX says most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support the new feature. To claim an entitlement, insert a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launch the game. The physical disc continues to work normally after the entitlement is claimed.
Thousands of games are expected to work with the feature initially. Some disc-based releases won’t be included, and XBOX plans to add more games later.
The Digital Entitlement Follows the Physical Disc
The Verge reports that the digital entitlement is tied to the specific physical disc rather than permanently to the account that first claims it. If that disc is shared and used with another account, the entitlement moves with the disc.
That means the entitlement isn’t a separate permanent digital copy left behind after the physical game changes hands. The disc itself remains central to the arrangement.
What still isn’t clear is how XBOX identifies each individual disc. Microsoft hasn’t publicly explained the technical method it uses to distinguish one physical disc from another. We know how the entitlement reportedly behaves when the disc moves. We don’t yet know the technology used to track that relationship.
XBOX Cloud Gaming and Play Anywhere Still Depend on Game Support
The digital entitlement can extend a supported physical purchase into newer forms of access. It doesn’t add features that the game doesn’t already support. XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming remain separate capabilities with their own game-by-game eligibility.
With XBOX Play Anywhere, supported games can be played across XBOX consoles, Windows PC, and supported gaming handhelds. XBOX Cloud Gaming provides cloud access separately when the individual game supports it.
For an existing physical library, claiming the entitlement doesn’t automatically make every supported disc playable through the cloud or on PC. Those options are only available when the individual game already supports XBOX Cloud Gaming or XBOX Play Anywhere.
Game Preservation and Broader Rollout
For XBOX, this is also part of its broader game preservation work. The physical disc still works after the entitlement is claimed, so supported games can gain newer ways to play without making owners buy them again digitally.
The next step comes on August 31, when XBOX Insiders begin testing the feature. XBOX hasn’t announced a wider release date yet, although The Verge reports that it’s expected to reach XBOX One and XBOX Series X more broadly in the coming months.
