Xbox Full Screen Experience Hits Preview for All Windows 11 Users

Various gaming devices, controllers, laptops, and a desktop arranged before a large monitor showcasing game screens for the full screen experience on Windows 11.

Starting today, the major update Windows gamers have been dreaming of is finally here! The Full Screen Experience (FSE) for Xbox is expanding, making the journey from boot-up to playing your favorite games faster and smoother than ever before. This feature is now generally available on all existing Windows 11 PCs.

Announced by Senior Technical Program Manager Cassie Chou, the goal of this update is crystal clear: eliminate friction and deliver a true console-like experience. The FSE brings essential performance optimizations and, critically, the ability to boot directly into the Xbox PC app.

Handhelds Get the Console Treatment

For devices like the ROG Ally, this update is essential. The FSE is specifically designed to minimize delays, making your portable PC feel less like a computer and more like a dedicated gaming machine.

As we noted in our full ROG Xbox Ally X review, maximizing performance and accessibility is key to the handheld experience. The FSE achieves this by providing a controller-navigable UI right from the start. This allows you to easily browse and launch titles from across your entire game library, including titles from most popular PC storefronts, without ever having to touch the traditional Windows desktop.

Why Desktop Gamers Should Still Care

While this is a massive win for handheld owners, Microsoft is not leaving desktop and laptop users behind. The Xbox Full Screen Experience is also launching in preview for Xbox Insiders across all other Windows 11 PCs.

This preview, designed for larger screens, still offers the controller-first navigation and a powerful Task Switcher for quickly swapping between your game and other apps. This feature ensures a seamless flow, even when using a mouse and keyboard setup.

Get the Full Experience Right Now

If you own a Windows Handheld, the FSE should be available now via your system Settings. If you are interested in trying the PC preview, you must be enrolled in both the Xbox Insider Program and the Windows Insider Program (Beta or Dev channels).
