Green-NX Arrives As XBOX Cloud Gaming Client For Nintendo Switch

Green-NX has launched as an unofficial XBOX Cloud Gaming client for Nintendo Switch. Bringing Microsoft’s cloud gaming service to homebrew-enabled consoles. The first public release arrived on July 22, 2026, and the open-source app reached version 1.0.18 two days later after several updates addressing connections, audio, touch controls, and image quality.

Green-NX handles the WebRTC connection, hardware H.264 video decoding, audio, controller input, and GPU rendering on Nintendo Switch. It supports 720p, 1080p, and 1080p HQ streaming at up to 60 frames per second.

Green-NX requires a Nintendo Switch running Atmosphère custom firmware and an active XBOX Game Pass subscription. It’s an experimental community app with no official connection to Microsoft or Nintendo.

Green-NX Supports Handheld Mode And TV Mode

Green-NX automatically switches between 720p output in handheld mode and 1080p output in TV mode.

Recent releases have added touch navigation, adjustable volume, optional video pacing, image sharpening for 1080p displays, and improved recovery when a media connection fails. The app also includes Microsoft device-code sign-in and a searchable XBOX Game Pass library.

Green-NX includes remote play from a linked XBOX console as well. Connected consoles appear through a separate Consoles tab inside the app.

Green-NX And GreenVita Arrived Days Apart

What caught my attention is that Green-NX arrived only days after GreenVita. Seeing separate homebrew developers bring XBOX Cloud Gaming to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Vita in the same week wasn’t something I expected.

GreenVita gives Sony’s discontinued handheld access to XBOX Cloud Gaming through its hardware H.264 decoder. Its early updates addressed input delay, menu navigation, Vita controls, and the storage of Microsoft authentication tokens.

Green-NX is designed around how Nintendo Switch is used today. Handheld mode, TV mode, touch navigation, HD rumble settings, automatic resolution switching, and several streaming options shape an app made specifically for Nintendo’s console. Both projects share the same general goal, but they are separate clients built around different hardware.

Early Testing Finds Some Remaining Problems

Early community testing showed Green-NX running XBOX Cloud Gaming, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Forza Horizon 6 among the games tested. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey needed more than one connection attempt before starting.

Some input delay was noticed while playing Forza Horizon 6. lthough it was less apparent when looking directly at the Nintendo Switch screen. Mortal Kombat 1 later stopped displaying new video while the game audio continued, requiring the stream to be closed.

Those results place Green-NX firmly in the early stages of development. Eight public releases in three days also suggest that its current problems could change quickly.
