PHYND Sees Traction With 18–24-Year-Olds in Back-to-School Push

PHYND is making a back-to-school push around dorm-room gaming. Its subscription-free cloud gaming service is available on compatible Samsung and LG Smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV devices, with no console required.

We recently spoke with PHYND founder André Swanston about who is using the service. He says PHYND is seeing meaningful traction among 18–24-year-olds, although what he described as “parent-aged adults” remain its strongest adopters.

Swanston also shared new details about how people use PHYND. The average amount of time people play at once is under 30 minutes, and a growing core group plays several times a week.

PHYND Is Seeing Traction With 18–24-Year-Olds

PHYND’s back-to-school push is reaching the age group it is targeting, but Swanston says 18–24-year-olds aren’t leading adoption right now. That distinction is important because parent-aged adults remain PHYND’s strongest group.

Swanston says families and adults across a wide age range are using PHYND to relax, unwind, or play together in the living room. He sees that as a different type of play from the longer, more dedicated console use people may associate with gaming.

Average PHYND Play Time Is Under 30 Minutes

Earlier this summer, PHYND said its app had been downloaded in more than six million U.S. homes. That told us how far the service had spread, but not what people were doing once it was on their TV. Swanston’s new usage details start to fill in that picture.

On average, people play PHYND for under 30 minutes at a time, according to Swanston. He says that’s much shorter than a typical console play period and believes it reflects a different audience and a different way of playing.

A core group is also playing several times a week, and Swanston says that group keeps growing.

Swanston says people who pair a game controller with their TV use PHYND more heavily than those who don’t. He believes that’s partly because a controller unlocks the entire PHYND library, including games built for remote-only play. He also says those users likely come in with more gaming intent from the start.

Swanston says PHYND is applying what works on its top-performing TV platforms across the others. He expects adoption and use to become more similar across TV brands over time.

PHYND Adjusts Streaming as Network Conditions Change

Swanston says PHYND is built to handle variable, often congested networks, including those found in dorms and student housing.

The service dynamically adjusts bitrates and data throughput as congestion spikes. Swanston says that helps prevent bufferbloat and packet loss. PHYND also varies stream compression using advanced codecs when bandwidth is inconsistent. Swanston says this can cut down on lag and preserve audio and visual quality.

In severe congestion, PHYND can scale back frame rates from 60 fps to 45 or 30 fps. Swanston says this is meant to keep latency low and gameplay responsive.

Exclusive Games and More Device Partnerships Are Coming

Swanston says PHYND is working toward a more personalized experience with greater customization and expanded social features.

New games are also coming, including games that will be exclusive to PHYND. Swanston didn’t identify the games or provide timing.

PHYND is also working on partnerships with additional device manufacturers. Swanston says PHYND expects to announce those partnerships soon.
