Netflix says Unhinged is bringing new people to Netflix Games and cloud gaming. Sean Krankel, Netflix’s head of narrative games and Night School studio director, told The Game Business that the horror game has reached people who hadn’t played a game through Netflix before, including some who had never tried a cloud game. Netflix hasn’t shared specific audience numbers.
Unhinged is a 30-to-40-minute cloud horror story that streams to a television or computer, with a phone serving as both the controller and part of the story. Night School created it for Netflix viewers interested in horror and thrillers who may be uncomfortable with complicated controls or games that take dozens of hours to finish.
The response has already started discussions about what could follow. Netflix is considering whether Unhinged should continue through a sequel or anthology, and the company is also examining episodic and multiplayer stories that use a phone as the controller.
Unhinged Reaches People New To Netflix Games
Krankel described the first-time audience as an important result for Netflix. Some people began with Unhinged even though they hadn’t tried another Netflix game, a cloud game, or an M-rated game through the service.
Netflix wants those newcomers to access a serious horror story without lowering its emotional depth. Using the phone to choose Ava’s direction or answer a call turns familiar actions into story decisions. Messages and the flashlight also arrive through the same device, connecting what happens on the television with what you’re holding.
Night School Removed Earlier Interaction Options
The finished version keeps most choices beneath its guided path. Accepting a call or visiting a certain area can change what Ava learns, but those decisions don’t stop the story for a long dialogue tree.
In our review, we praised the way the phone became part of the horror story, particularly through calls, messages, and the flashlight. We also found that the guided movement and limited visible branching reduced how much control the story appeared to offer. Krankel’s comments now add useful context to both sides of that experience.
Night School reached the final structure after 18 months of development and several earlier experiments. One version treated the phone like a broader collection of apps. Other versions allowed freer navigation and branching dialogue. The team removed those ideas when they slowed the horror story and pulled attention away from Ava’s immediate situation.
The phone still has an active role, but each function is tied to the next decision or story event. That keeps the interaction focused without turning the device into a separate menu to explore.
More Unhinged Formats Are Under Discussion
Netflix is discussing whether another Unhinged story should continue from the first game or use an anthology format with a different story. Krankel also raised episodic releases and multiplayer as possibilities for future phone-controlled games.
The current 30-to-40-minute format isn’t a fixed requirement. Netflix is examining different lengths and release models as it studies how people respond to this type of interactive story. Film and television conversations have also taken place. Krankel stressed that those discussions remain at a very early stage.
Netflix Is Expanding Its Narrative Game Work
The discussions around Unhinged connect to broader narrative game plans inside Netflix. Krankel leads Netflix Games’ Narrative division, one of four areas within its gaming operation, alongside Mainstream, Kids and Family, and Party and Puzzle.
The Narrative division has early internal development underway and is also working with outside studios. Netflix expects those games to serve different purposes, from introducing new properties to testing other ways of interacting with stories or using different release models. Krankel expects Netflix to discuss more of this work around January 2027 or a little later.
